No 5G in your area? How to tell whose fault it is
If 5G never appears, exactly one of three things is usually missing — 5G has not been deployed where you are, your phone lacks the bands or the architecture your carrier uses, or your plan and SIM do not include 5G. Test in a location where 5G is known to work: if it appears there, the problem was coverage. If it still does not, the problem is your phone or your plan.
Coverage maps say your area has 5G. Your phone disagrees. Before blaming the carrier, it is worth knowing that three separate things must line up, and only one of them is coverage.
The three conditions

Only the third is something a support call can switch on. The other two need either time or a different handset, which is why "I'll ring my carrier" so often leads nowhere.
The test that settles it fastest
Take the phone somewhere 5G definitely works — a city centre, a large station, a shopping centre — and watch what happens.
- 5G appears there → your device and plan are fine. The problem is coverage at home. Nothing you do to the phone will change that.
- 5G never appears anywhere → the problem is the phone or the plan, and coverage is a red herring.
That single test separates the three conditions faster than any amount of settings-fiddling, and it costs nothing.
Why coverage maps overpromise
Carrier maps are modelled, not measured. They are generated from transmitter locations and terrain, and they generally assume ideal conditions — outdoors, clear line of sight, no congestion.
Real coverage is worse than the map in ways the map cannot show:
- Buildings. Mid-band 5G penetrates walls poorly. A street with strong 5G can become 4G two rooms inside.
- Distance from the cell. Mid-band covers roughly a mile in good conditions, and much less in practice.
- Terrain and foliage. Both attenuate higher frequencies noticeably.
- Indoor coverage is often simply absent even where outdoor coverage is genuine.
A map showing your postcode covered means a transmitter serves the area. It does not mean the signal reaches your desk.
Low-band coverage is still 5G
Some areas are covered only by low-band 5G — n28, n71, n5. It travels a long way and penetrates buildings well, and it delivers speeds broadly similar to good LTE.

If 5G never appears anywhere
Then it is the device or the plan, and the order to check is:
- Confirm the phone supports 5G at all — how to check.

- Check your bands against your carrier's. n78 globally, n77 and n41 in the US. Imported handsets are where this bites.
- Check your plan includes 5G. On some carriers it is a tariff feature, not a default.
- Ask about a newer SIM. A few carriers require a profile update for standalone.

Rollout is uneven, and that is normal
Deployment follows population density and commercial return. Cities first, then transport corridors, then towns, then rural areas. Indoor and basement coverage comes last or never.
In India, Jio and Airtel have built out considerably faster than Vi and BSNL, so "no 5G in my area" on the latter two is frequently just rollout. In the US, all three national carriers have broad low-band with mid-band concentrated in populated areas. In the UK, coverage is strong in cities and thin outside them.
If the answer is rollout, there is no fix — only a timeline, and carriers are generally unwilling to give one for a specific address.
