How to check whether your phone supports 5G
Open Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → Preferred network type and look for an option containing 5G. If it is there, the phone supports 5G in some form. That is only the first of three checks though — you also need the specific bands your carrier deployed, and on some networks standalone support. A phone can be genuinely 5G-capable and still never show 5G on your network.
"Does my phone support 5G" sounds like a yes or no question. It is closer to three questions, and a phone can pass the first while failing the others — which is why a handset advertised as 5G can sit on 4G forever on your network.
The quick check
Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → [your SIM] → Preferred network type
If an option listing 5G appears, the modem supports 5G. On Samsung the same setting is usually Settings → Connections → Mobile networks → Network mode.
No 5G option at all is a fairly reliable no. Android builds the list from what the modem reports and what the carrier configuration permits, so an absent option means one of those two said no.
A present option means yes — but only to the first of three questions.
The three questions

The first is what a spec sheet answers. The second and third are what actually decide whether you ever see a 5G icon, and neither is usually printed on the box.
Why "supports 5G" is not enough
5G is not one radio. It is a set of frequency bands, and a phone supports a specific list of them. A model sold in one region frequently omits the bands another region's carriers built on.
The bands that matter most in practice:
- n78 — the global mid-band workhorse. Most of the world's usable 5G runs here.
- n77 — adjacent to n78 and heavily used in the US.
- n41 — mid-band, significant on T-Mobile and in parts of Asia.
- n28 / n71 / n5 — low-band. Wide coverage, speeds close to good LTE.
- n258 / n260 / n261 — mmWave. Very fast, very short range, rare.
An imported handset missing n78 can show 5G on a low-band carrier and be permanently incapable of the mid-band that would have made it fast. The bands guide covers which ones matter where.
The architecture question
Some networks run standalone 5G with their own core; others run non-standalone, anchored to existing 4G. A phone can support one and not the other.

How to check properly
In rough order of effort:
- Read what the device reports. This is what 5G Check does — it separates what the hardware can do from what your carrier has enabled from what you are connected to at this moment. Those three are routinely confused with each other, and confusing them is what sends people down the wrong path.
- Look up your exact model number, not the marketing name. The same phone name often covers several variants with different band lists. The model number is under Settings → About phone.
- Check your carrier's supported-device list. Most publish one. If your exact variant is not on it, the carrier configuration may never enable 5G regardless of hardware.
- Confirm your plan includes 5G. On some carriers it is a tariff feature rather than a default.
Signs your phone does support 5G but you never see it
If the setting exists and is on and 5G still never appears, the likely causes in order:
- No coverage where you are. Carrier maps are optimistic; the honest test is trying somewhere you know has it.
- Your carrier needs standalone and your phone is non-standalone only.
- Band mismatch — common with imported and grey-market handsets.
- Plan or SIM not provisioned for 5G.

What the box will not tell you
Marketing labels — 5G, 5G+, 5G UC, 5G UW — describe spectrum tiers and carrier branding, not architecture or band lists. They are not standardised between carriers, and none of them tell you whether the handset in your hand will work on the network you are on.
The only reliable answers come from the model number's band list and from what the device itself reports.
