How to enable VoLTE — and what to do when the option is missing
On most Android phones VoLTE lives at Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → your SIM → VoLTE, though carriers rename it to HD Voice, 4G Calling or Enhanced 4G LTE Mode. If the toggle is not there at all, that is the important case — it almost always means your carrier has not approved your exact device model for VoLTE, and no setting on the phone will bring it back.
There are really two questions hiding in "how do I turn on VoLTE". If the switch is there, this takes ten seconds. If it is missing, the switch was never the problem — and that is the case worth understanding.
Where the setting lives
On most Android phones:
Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → [your SIM] → VoLTE
Manufacturers and carriers rename it constantly. Look for any of:
- VoLTE or VoLTE Calls
- HD Voice or HD Calling
- 4G Calling or Voice over LTE
- Enhanced 4G LTE Mode — common on Samsung and older builds
- Wi-Fi & mobile network calling — where it is bundled with Wi-Fi calling
On Samsung it is often under Settings → Connections → Mobile networks. On Xiaomi and Redmi, Settings → SIM cards & mobile networks → [SIM] → Use VoLTE.
Turn it on, then toggle airplane mode for ten seconds so the phone re-registers.
If the toggle is missing entirely
This is the outcome most people arrive here with, and it is worth being straight about: a missing VoLTE toggle is not a settings problem.
Android only shows the switch when the carrier configuration on your phone says VoLTE is permitted for this network and this device model. No toggle means that permission is absent. Digging through menus, resetting settings or factory resetting will not create it.
The usual reasons:
- Your exact model is not on the carrier's approved list. Most common with imported or grey-market handsets — a model sold in another region often carries a different variant code the carrier does not recognise.
- The carrier has not provisioned VoLTE on your account, which happens with older SIMs and some prepaid or MVNO plans.
- You are running a custom ROM, which frequently loses the carrier configuration entirely.

By carrier
The mechanism is the same everywhere. What differs is the naming, and whether the carrier still has anything to fall back on.
Jio (India)
Jio is a VoLTE-only network. It has no 2G or 3G at all — every call on Jio is a VoLTE call, by design.
That makes the diagnosis unusually clean. If a phone works on Jio, VoLTE is working. If VoLTE is unavailable on your handset, the phone cannot make calls on Jio at all rather than falling back. There is usually no toggle to find, because there is nothing to switch off.
So "VoLTE not showing" on Jio almost always means the device is not supported, not that a setting is hidden.
Airtel (India)
Airtel supports VoLTE across its 4G network and maintains an approved device list. The setting appears under the SIM once the carrier configuration permits it.
If it is missing, the two things worth doing are asking Airtel whether your exact model is supported, and swapping to a newer SIM — an older SIM predating their VoLTE rollout is a common cause.
Vi — Vodafone Idea (India)
Same pattern as Airtel: VoLTE available on 4G, subject to a device list, with availability that has historically varied by circle. Worth confirming both the device and your circle with support if the toggle does not appear.
BSNL (India)
BSNL's 4G and VoLTE rollout has trailed the private networks and remains uneven by region. If VoLTE is unavailable on BSNL where you are, local network readiness is at least as likely as anything to do with your phone.
Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile (US)
All three have retired their 3G networks. VoLTE is not an enhancement on these networks — it is how calling works. A phone that cannot do VoLTE cannot make calls on them, regardless of signal.
Verizon has historically called it Advanced Calling or HD Voice; AT&T and T-Mobile use HD Voice and VoLTE. All three publish supported-device lists, and all three are strict about non-approved handsets, so imported phones are the most common failure here.
EE, Vodafone and O2 (UK)
UK networks label it 4G Calling (EE and Vodafone) or 4G Calling / VoLTE (O2). All three run device-approval lists, and support has typically arrived on handsets bought through the network before SIM-free ones.
After switching it on
Toggle airplane mode, then check that it actually registered — the setting being on is not the same as the network having accepted you. The phone must complete an IMS registration before any call uses VoLTE, which is what VoLTE Check reads directly.
