IMS registration status — what not registered means
IMS is the IP Multimedia Subsystem — the carrier system that carries VoLTE, Wi-Fi calling and VoNR as data rather than over a legacy voice circuit. Your phone must register with it before any of those work. A failed registration nearly always means the carrier has not provisioned the service, or has not approved your exact device model, rather than anything you can change in settings.
If you have ever looked at a diagnostic screen and seen IMS: not registered, that one line tells you more than any other status on the phone. This explains what it means and what follows from it.
What IMS actually is
IMS — the IP Multimedia Subsystem — is a system your carrier runs to handle calls and messages as internet traffic instead of over a dedicated voice circuit.
Before IMS, a phone call used a channel reserved for voice, separate from data. IMS replaced that: your voice becomes packets travelling over the same connection as everything else, and IMS handles the signalling — finding the other party, ringing them, setting up the media.
Three things depend on it:

All three are IMS services. That shared dependency is why they fail together, and it is the fastest diagnostic you have.
What "registration" means
Registration is your phone announcing itself: here I am, this is my number, route my calls to me.
It happens automatically when the phone attaches to a network and repeats periodically. It requires several things to already be true:
- The device supports IMS on this network
- The carrier has provisioned IMS on your account and SIM
- The carrier's configuration recognises your device model
- The phone can reach the carrier's IMS servers
If any fails, registration fails — and every service above it stops.
Why "not registered" is such a useful status
Because it splits the problem cleanly in two.
Registered means the whole chain worked. Your device is capable, the carrier provisioned you, your model is approved, and the network accepted you. If calls still misbehave, look at coverage or the far end — not at this.
Not registered means something upstream failed, and almost none of it is fixable in settings. Toggling switches, resetting network settings, factory resets — these change local state, and local state is rarely the cause.
That is worth internalising, because it saves hours. The usual real causes:
- The carrier has not provisioned IMS on your account — common on older SIMs and some prepaid or MVNO plans
- Your exact device model is not on the carrier's approved list — the imported-phone problem, and the most common cause by far
- The device genuinely cannot do IMS on this network

What registration is not
A few things people reasonably assume, which are not true:
- It is not a signal strength problem. Full bars and no registration is entirely normal; they are unrelated.
- It is not a data problem. Data works over the same connection but does not depend on IMS. Browsing perfectly while calls fail is expected.
- It is not usually fixed by a factory reset. A reset clears local settings, not carrier provisioning or your model's whitelist status.
- It does not follow the phone. The same handset can register on one carrier and not another, because the approved list is per-carrier.
Why the answer depends on which carrier you are on
The approved-device list is the part people underestimate, and it is entirely per-carrier. The same handset can register perfectly on one network and refuse on another in the same city, because each carrier decides for itself which models it will enable IMS for.
That list is usually shortest at regional and smaller carriers. A large national network has commercial reasons to support almost any handset someone walks in with. A regional one supports the phones it sells, and often little else — so an unlocked, imported or grey-market device can show full signal, pass every other check, and still never register.
This is the single most common reason a phone reports "not registered" on one network while working elsewhere. If you brought a phone to the carrier rather than buying it from them, that is the first thing to check: whether your exact model — not the family, the exact model and variant — appears on their supported device list.
There is rarely a user-side fix. The carrier either enables your model or it does not, and no setting on the handset overrides that.
Why it matters more than it used to
Carriers worldwide have switched off 3G, and many are retiring 2G. Where that has happened, there is no legacy circuit to fall back on.
Historically, a phone that could not register with IMS simply dropped to 3G for calls — slower data during the call, but the call connected. Now, on a network with no fallback left, failed IMS registration can mean no calls at all, on a phone showing full signal. That is why the status has gone from a technical curiosity to something worth checking before buying a handset.
