Why your phone keeps switching from 5G to 4G
Switching between 5G and 4G is normal behaviour, not a fault. Phones hand back to 4G when the 5G signal weakens, when you move indoors, when the phone gets hot, when battery saver is on, and — on non-standalone networks — constantly, because the 4G anchor is always in use. It only indicates a problem if the phone never returns to 5G in a place where 5G is known to work.
The icon flips to 4G, then back, then away again. It looks like something is broken. Almost always it is the network doing precisely what it was designed to do.
Here is what causes each switch, and the one pattern that is genuinely worth investigating.
The short version
5G — especially mid-band and mmWave — uses higher frequencies that carry more data but travel less far and penetrate walls poorly. 4G reaches further. Your phone continuously picks whichever gives a usable connection, and near the edge of 5G coverage that means switching back and forth.
A phone that never drops to 4G would be a phone that drops calls instead.
The common causes
You moved
The most frequent one, and the least interesting. Mid-band 5G covers roughly a mile in good conditions and considerably less through buildings. Walking indoors, into a lift, onto a train, or into a basement will hand you back to 4G. This is coverage, not a fault.
Non-standalone architecture
On non-standalone 5G — which is most networks — your phone maintains a 4G connection at all times alongside the 5G one, because 4G carries the signalling. The 5G part is added on top for data.
The practical effect is that the indicator can flip frequently as the 5G carrier is added and dropped, while the underlying connection never actually goes away. The NSA and SA guide explains why.
Why you see 4G+ instead of 5G
4G+ — shown as LTE+ on some phones — is not a halfway state between 4G and 5G. It means the phone is combining several LTE carriers at once, a technique called carrier aggregation, and it exists independently of 5G.
On a non-standalone network the two sit side by side. The 4G anchor is always there; when the 5G carrier is added on top you see 5G, and when it is dropped you fall back to whatever the anchor is doing on its own — which, if it is aggregating LTE carriers, displays as 4G+.
So 4G+ instead of 5G means the same thing as plain 4G here: the 5G carrier is not currently attached. The plus tells you the LTE side is running well, not that 5G is partly connected. It is a genuinely fast connection, often faster than low-band 5G, which is why the swap is easy to miss until you look at the icon.

The phone is hot
5G modems generate real heat. When a phone gets warm — direct sun, long video calls, wireless charging, a thick case, or navigation on a windscreen mount — it reduces modem activity to protect itself, and dropping to 4G is one of the first things it does.
If the switch correlates with the phone being warm and heavy use, this is your answer.
Battery saver
Most Android battery savers restrict 5G, and some manufacturers restrict it below a battery threshold without saying so plainly. If 5G disappears reliably below 20%, this is why. The battery guide covers the trade.
The carrier decided
Networks actively steer devices. During congestion, or when a cell is being maintained, a carrier can move you to 4G deliberately. There is nothing to fix and no indication given.
Adaptive or smart 5G settings
Several manufacturers ship a mode that uses 5G only when an app actually needs the throughput, and sits on 4G otherwise, to save battery. It looks identical to a fault. Look for Adaptive connectivity, Smart 5G or similar in network settings.
When it is a problem
One pattern is worth investigating: 5G never comes back, in a place where you know 5G works and previously had it.
Work through it in this order:
- Toggle airplane mode for ten seconds. Forces a fresh network selection, and fixes a surprising share of stuck attachments.
- Restart the phone. Clears modem state that a mode toggle does not.
- Check the preferred network type has not been reset to an LTE-only option by an update.
- Check battery saver and any adaptive connectivity setting.
- Try the SIM in another phone. Splits handset from account cleanly.
- Reset network settings. Clears stale carrier configuration; you will need to re-enter Wi-Fi passwords.
If it works in another phone in the same spot, the problem is your handset or its configuration, not the network or your account.
Reading what is actually happening
The status icon is a poor instrument. Carriers configure when it appears, and several show 5G whenever a 5G cell is merely available rather than in use — so the icon can say 5G while every byte travels over LTE.
Reading the registration state directly is the only way to know what you are attached to right now, which is what 5G Check reports. It also distinguishes standalone from non-standalone, which is what makes the constant flipping legible rather than mysterious.
If 5G shows but feels no faster than 4G, that is a different problem: why 5G can be slow.
Should you just lock it to 4G?
Sometimes, yes. If your area only has low-band 5G, speeds will be close to good LTE anyway, and forcing 4G costs little while improving battery life and stopping the flicker.
If you have mid-band nearby, locking to 4G gives up the real speed improvement. Check what you actually have before deciding.
