Why 5G drains your battery, and what to do about it
5G drains battery mainly because non-standalone networks keep the LTE and 5G radios running simultaneously, and because a weak 5G signal forces the phone to transmit at higher power. Standalone 5G is significantly more efficient since it drops the LTE anchor. Restricting the phone to 4G in areas with poor 5G coverage is usually the single most effective fix.
If battery life fell noticeably after moving to a 5G phone or plan, that is a real effect with understandable causes — not something you imagined, and not necessarily a faulty device.
The main cause: two radios, not one
Most 5G coverage today is non-standalone, which keeps an LTE connection as a mandatory anchor and adds 5G on top for data. Your phone is running both radios at once, all the time.

Until standalone coverage is common, dual-radio operation is simply what 5G costs on most networks.
Weak signal costs more than fast signal saves
This is the effect people most consistently underestimate.
A phone transmits at whatever power is needed to reach the tower. Weak signal means higher transmit power, continuously. It is one of the largest single drains on any mobile device, and it has nothing to do with which generation you are using.
The consequence is counter-intuitive: a marginal 5G signal drains more battery than a strong 4G signal, while delivering worse speeds. At the edge of a mid-band cell — where 5G coverage frequently ends abruptly — you get the worst of both.
Worse still is a phone oscillating between 5G and LTE as you move. Each transition costs power, and a device sitting on the boundary can spend much of its day switching.

That third row is worth dwelling on. Some of what gets blamed on 5G is simply the phone being used more, because a faster connection makes streaming and scrolling more pleasant. The radio is not always the culprit.
What actually helps
In rough order of effect.
1. Restrict to 4G where 5G coverage is poor. The single most effective change. If 5G in your area is low-band and no faster than LTE anyway, you lose nothing:
Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → Preferred network type → LTE/4G
Some manufacturers hide this or remove it entirely. Where available, it is worth trying for a few days and comparing.
2. Turn off 5G when you know you will need endurance. Travel days, long shifts, anywhere you cannot charge.
3. Keep the phone cool. Heat and battery drain reinforce each other. Direct sun, a thick case during heavy use, and wireless charging while streaming all make it worse.
4. Check adaptive or smart 5G settings. Many phones can switch to 5G only when it is actually beneficial. Enable it if offered.
5. Rule out the obvious. An app misbehaving in the background looks identical to radio drain from the outside. Check battery usage by app before concluding it is the network.
What does not help
- Airplane mode toggling. Fine as a one-off reset, useless as a habit.
- Battery saver apps. These generally consume more than they recover.
- Disabling 5G where coverage is excellent. On a strong standalone network, 5G can be more efficient than LTE — it finishes transfers faster and returns the radio to idle sooner.
That last point matters. 5G is not inherently power-hungry. Poorly-covered, non-standalone 5G is.
Will this improve?
Yes, gradually. Carriers migrating to standalone cores removes the dual-radio penalty entirely, and each generation of modem is more efficient than the last.

Does turning off 5G really save battery?
In areas with weak or non-standalone 5G, usually yes, and sometimes substantially. Where 5G coverage is strong and standalone, the difference is small and can even favour 5G.
Why does my phone get hot on 5G?
Running two radios simultaneously generates more heat, and mmWave more still. Heat then reduces efficiency, which generates more heat. If the phone is warm during normal use, that cycle is likely under way.
Is 5G worse for battery than 4G on every phone?
No. It depends on modem generation, coverage quality and whether the network is standalone. Newer modems on standalone networks close most of the gap.
My battery got worse after a software update, not after switching to 5G
Then 5G is probably not the cause. Check battery usage by app first — an update can change background behaviour, and that looks the same from the outside.
Does 5G drain battery even when I am not using data?
