VoLTE vs VoWiFi vs VoNR — the difference, plainly
VoLTE carries calls over the 4G network, VoWiFi carries them over any Wi-Fi connection, and VoNR carries them over standalone 5G. All three use the same IMS core, which is why they tend to stop working together. VoNR additionally requires a standalone 5G network; without it, a 5G phone drops to LTE for the call.
Your phone can carry a call over data in three different ways, and the settings screen rarely explains which is which. The names look interchangeable. They are not — but they share more than most people realise, and that shared part is the key to troubleshooting all of them.
The one thing they have in common
All three are IMS services. IMS — the IP Multimedia Subsystem — is the signalling core your carrier runs to handle calls as data rather than as a dedicated voice circuit.
Your phone registers with IMS once. That single registration is what enables VoLTE, VoWiFi and VoNR alike. It is the reason people report that Wi-Fi calling and HD calling "both stopped at the same time" — they did, because the thing underneath them failed.
If none of the three work, the problem is almost certainly IMS registration rather than any individual feature.

VoLTE — the default
VoLTE is what handles most calls on a modern network. Your phone stays on 4G, and voice travels as packets alongside your data rather than dropping the connection to a legacy circuit.
The practical benefits are wideband audio, noticeably faster call setup, and keeping full data speed during the call — which older circuit-switched fallback did not.
It is also increasingly not optional. With 3G networks switched off in most markets, a phone that cannot do VoLTE often cannot make calls at all. If yours is not working, the troubleshooting guide covers the four things it depends on.
VoWiFi — the same call, over your broadband
VoWiFi, usually branded Wi-Fi Calling, routes the identical IMS call over a Wi-Fi network instead of the mobile one. Your phone reaches the carrier's core through a secure gateway over the internet.
It matters in one specific situation, and it matters a lot: you have no mobile signal but you do have Wi-Fi. Basements, thick-walled buildings, rural properties, underground offices.
Worth knowing:
- Calls are normally billed as ordinary mobile calls, not as data — including over your home broadband.
- Many carriers let you call home-country numbers at domestic rates while abroad on Wi-Fi, which can be a substantial saving. Policies vary, so check before relying on it.
- Emergency calling is the significant caveat. Emergency services locate you from the network, and a Wi-Fi call has no reliable location. Carriers require a registered address for this reason, and it must be kept current. If you have moved, update it.
- Handover between Wi-Fi and mobile mid-call works on most modern networks, but not all — an older device may drop the call as you walk out of the door.
VoNR — voice over 5G proper
VoNR is the 5G-native equivalent, and it is the newest of the three.
The requirement people miss: VoNR only works on standalone 5G. Non-standalone 5G keeps an LTE anchor and has no way to carry voice itself, so calls fall back to VoLTE on that anchor. If you are not sure which architecture you are on, the NSA and SA guide explains how to tell.
On a standalone network without VoNR enabled, something called EPS fallback happens instead: the moment you place a call, your phone is moved off 5G onto LTE to carry it, then returns to 5G afterwards. This is why some people notice their 5G indicator disappearing during calls. It is expected behaviour, not a fault.
VoNR's advantages are faster call setup and staying on 5G throughout, so data does not degrade during a call. Support depends on carrier, device and firmware all aligning, which is why it is still patchy.

That second and third row are the useful ones. Because both services share IMS, one working while the other does not narrows the problem down considerably.
Which should you leave enabled?
All of them. There is no meaningful downside.
Your phone selects between them automatically based on what is available, preferring the mobile network when signal is good and Wi-Fi when it is not. Leaving Wi-Fi Calling switched on costs nothing when unused and rescues you when coverage disappears.
The only setting worth thinking about is the Wi-Fi calling preference some phones expose — whether to prefer Wi-Fi or mobile when both are available. Prefer Wi-Fi if your indoor signal is poor; prefer mobile otherwise, since it handles movement better.

Does Wi-Fi calling use my data allowance?
